Great points Andrew. This is one of the trickiest parts, as it is so clear to everyone if it is done poorly (or well). Very much agree to hire on attitude, and your other points.

I think it is important to ask questions to determine what someone will do on the job rather than what they say in the interview. This topic is a great intro to the blog i wrote at the link below.

I think anyone hiring has a different agenda. Let's assume you have 3 people on the interview, as well as the candidate. Everyone on the interview is a stakeholder, he wants the right candidate for his cause: the technical manager doesn't care about the price, he wants a docile and hard working individual, the hr manager wants a cheap individual...

Any question asked during an interview is not chatting, sometimes even asking the candidates about them is knowing how they will affect you in the future. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? This is not about the candidate's dreams, it's to see if the candidate is going to stay in this job, steal one of the interviewer's position, or just quit.

PS: For those hiring a Project Manager here's a list of <a href='http://www.pmhut.com/300-project-manager-interview-questions' rel="nofollow">PM interview questions</a>.

I'm glad that the episode and my advice hit home for you. I've always been a big fan of stopping and looking back at what you did and figuring out what you can learn from it. The best leaders and managers do this all the time and it is something that everyone SHOULD be doing.

Have a happy thanksgiving.

Hello. I was wondering if you would be able to provide tips on recruiting lifeguards. I work at a high school natatorium in Pennsylvania. Due to the laws affecting school district hiring, all of our staff members (full time and lifeguards) are required to submit information for background checks. These checks cost upwards of $80 and take up to two months for information to be returned.

We have been exploring ways to combat this lengthy process, but we have been repeatedly shot down by our personnel department. We are not permitted to reimburse the cost of the background clearances, and everyone, including minors (whose records it is illegal to show) must go through this process.

I've had people approach me for an application, and hand it back to me or tell me it isn't worth the trouble, time, or money.

We already pay more than anyone else in our area, and we are still having difficulty attracting employees. We are on the verge of reducing the amount of programming we can offer because of a lack of staff. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give in this situation.

I fully agree with you. the drowings keep happening and we in the industry just keep doing things over and over. I have been a lifegurad instructor for over 10 years and even the best training I can provide for them does not mean they will use it at every moment they are working. Adult supervision is the key plus I am a strong advocate of Jeff Ellis audits. The red cross has been trying to do the same but has not followed through. I would love to train managers how to monitor thier staff in a positive manner and exucute a program that enhances the gurad program to include this training for all pools nation wide. If you have any suggestions how I could get started on such a program let me know. Something needs to be done otherwise your Lifeguard for losers will ring true.
